EDIT - Awww man, they deleted the video! Long story short, And of FIAT’s ~490-650cc, Inline 2-cylinder, air-cooled twins. :)

A well-balanced 4-cylinder that makes 100 HP per liter. Preferably over 2 liters in displacement.
![]() 09/21/2016 at 22:31 |

I’m partial to a naturally aspirated inline-6 w/ variable valve timing and ITBs.
![]() 09/21/2016 at 22:32 |

Medium to big inline-6 engines. Like the AMC six and the 300-cube Ford.

compared to the typical V8 displacement in America, small would be 3 to 4 liters.

A small, rev-happy inline-six with twin SU carburettors. Not a whole lot of power, but character in spades.

I was specifically speaking about the 1997 and up Toyota 1UZ-FE VVTI. Also the 3UZ was close at 4.3 liters.

DOHC air cooled twin. Supposedly the Honda CB450 was the first DOHC production bike. Made around 47 hp when it came out in 1965. I think it’s one of the best looking engines Honda has made, especially when the magnesium engine covers are cleaned up. I love mine. Lots of torque for an old air cooled Honda. Sounds great at full tilt.

My favorite engine? A factory-offered straight 6 with crossflow head and individual-runner Weber side drafts. Blueprinted for smooth operation, and dyno-tuned for instantaneous throttle response. (Like those in the 240Z, for example.)

Volvo T5
Bonus points however to the new T8 engines which are a turbo and supercharged 4 banger with electric motors!
![]() 09/21/2016 at 23:33 |

Quad-turbo straight 12 that will explode if it revs past 3k, because who doesn’t want enough torque to start earthquakes?
![]() 09/22/2016 at 00:14 |

A nice high revving V10.
It’s not something that I want to own - I could never use it properly - but holy hell do they sound good.

Big straight sixes with a wide powerband, and torque, so probably SOHC, but not necessarily. BMW M30, probably 1JZ, though I’ve never driven someone with a 1JZ.

Plus quite a lot of 70s supercars had low displacement V8s (even 2.0 in some cases). No variable valve timing there though.

Rotary, V10 and V12 are all awesome - but as far as ordinary engines go, my favourite are low displacement V6s (2.0 or under).
Like the Mazda K-series engine. Very smooth engines, with a bit more grunt than your usual four-pot.
